North Ward Center basketball team returns from tournament with winning record

The North Ward Center's Small Fry basketball team returned from an international tournament as victors, winning three out of five games in tough competition against teams from Puerto Rico and Chicago. The 13-member team competed in the International Small Fry Basketball Tournament held April 13-16 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The team finished in 11th place out of 32 teams from Puerto Rico, New Jersey, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

 

Michele Adubato honored by Newark educational society

This article originally appeared May 22, 2009 on nj.com Michele Adubato, the deputy executive director of the North Ward Center, was honored by the Benedetto Croce Educational Society with a distinguished leadership award for her years of dedication as teacher and administrator in the Newark public school system. Adubato worked as vice principal at New Jersey Regional Day School in Newark, a school for children with autism spectrum disorder and pervasive developmental delays, before joining the North Ward Center in September.

This story originally ran in The Asbury Park Press on Aug. 19, 2009 He spent Tuesday at the Shark River, miles away from his classroom, but Ryan Hernandez learned several important lessons anyway. He learned kayaking is exhilarating but exhausting. He learned that without knowledge of math and science, "you're not really going to do so good" in a boat. He learned how to tie a knot that could help keep a sailboat firmly in place in middle of a river.

 

Robert Treat Academy debate team takes first place

This article originally appeared on nj.com May 19, 2009 Robert Treat Academy's debate team was awarded first-place in the school division of the Jersey Urban Debate League. The first-place prize was one of 14 awards the team took home from the league's awards luncheon on May 12 at the Paul Robeson Campus Center at Rutgers University-Newark.
