Assemblywoman Grace Spencer, autism advocate Michele Adubato and legal disabilities expert Paul Prior are among those who will participate in a panel discussion at Seton Hall Law School in Newark focusing on the best ways to serve urban students with autism.

Sponsored by the law school's Urban Education Law & Policy Initiative, the discussion will be on April 5 at Seton Hall Law School, 1109 Raymond Blvd, Newark, at 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

North Ward Center founder honored for contributions to social justice and education

Stephen N. Adubato, the founder of The North Ward Center and the Robert Treat Academy charter school, was honored by two organizations in April for his ongoing contributions to education and social justice.

Adubato was among five leaders honored by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund at its Awards of Excellence dinner March 18. Two days later, he was given the President's Award by the National Association of African-American Administrators at their 18th annual Gladys Hillman-Jones Scholarship and Leadership Awards Breakfast.

Coalition of Newark educators form unlikely alliance trying to reform city schools

With educational leaders from Washington to Trenton embracing the role of charter schools in public education, a group of Newark educators - from both charter and district schools - has formed an unlikely alliance to tackle the work of reforming Newark's city schools.

 

In all, 55 teachers and administrators meet monthly, and have even attended a December retreat, at each member's own cost, in Puerto Rico. Members say the group is trying to put long-held prejudices aside and share successful practices.

Students at Robert Treat Academy raise $5,000 for Haiti earthquake victims

Students of the Robert Treat Academy in Newark broke open their piggy banks earlier this month to raise $5,248.79 for Haitian earthquake victims. 

The North and Central campuses of the charter school held a "Penny Wars" competition from Feb. 1 through 8 where students divided into teams to raise the most money. Pennies counted as "positive" points while dimes, nickels and quarters thrown into the opposing teams' buckets were deducted from the opposing team's total.

Robert Treat Academy students raise money for Haitian earthquake victims

The student council at Robert Treat Academy will donate the proceeds of their annual fundraiser to help the victims of the earthquake that struck Haiti.

Students at the K-8 Newark charter school will sell handmade chocolate hearts lollipops as Valentine grams for $1 each. They are hoping to produce and sell anywhere between 500 and 1,000 lollipops for this year's fundraiser.

Michele Adubato addresses Barringer High School Graduates

Read the story as it originally appeared on nj.com North Ward Center Deputy Executive Director Michele Adubato told the graduating class at Barringer High School in Newark on Friday that the community was proud of them for making it through high school. “You don’t know me, but I’m proud of you,” said Adubato, the commencement speaker. “You need to know, people who don’t know you are proud of you. More than 30 percent of the students who began this journey with you did not make it. You have the right to be proud of yourself.”

Jackie Robinson Day celebrated in Newark

Read the story as it originally appeared on nj.com | localtalknews.com Jackie Robinson Day was celebrated in Newark Tuesday at the Harriet Tubman School as Robinson’s family members presented the school with a baseball signed by the Hall of Famer and first African-American to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball.   The day was designed as “Jackie Robinson Day,” in Newark by the City Council, a mayoral proclamation and a resolution from the state Legislature. The event is 63 years almost to the day (April 15, 1947) when Jackie Robison made his debut in Ebbets Field in Brooklyn on opening day.

This story originally ran in The Asbury Park Press on Aug. 19, 2009 He spent Tuesday at the Shark River, miles away from his classroom, but Ryan Hernandez learned several important lessons anyway. He learned kayaking is exhilarating but exhausting. He learned that without knowledge of math and science, "you're not really going to do so good" in a boat. He learned how to tie a knot that could help keep a sailboat firmly in place in middle of a river.
