Jackie Robinson Day was celebrated in Newark Tuesday at the Harriet Tubman School as Robinson’s family members presented the school with a baseball signed by the Hall of Famer and first African-American to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball.
The day was designed as “Jackie Robinson Day,” in Newark by the City Council, a mayoral proclamation and a resolution from the state Legislature. The event is 63 years almost to the day (April 15, 1947) when Jackie Robison made his debut in Ebbets Field in Brooklyn on opening day.
The Center for Autism will mark Autism Awareness Month with a series of workshops in April highlighting the center's role as a valuable resource for urban residents who need information about autism spectrum disorders and pervasive developmental delays.
The Center for Autism, located at 341 Roseville Avenue in Newark, will host three seminars during the month for parents, caregivers, health care professionals and first responders.

Autism advocates discussed the need to provide high-quality services to students with autism in urban areas at a panel discussion at Seton Hall Law School in Newark.
Sponsored by the Urban Education Law & Policy Initiative, the panel featured Assemblywoman Grace Spencer, autism advocate Michele Adubato, legal disabilities expert Paul Prior, Jersey City School Board member Suzanne Mack and Kim Williams, the parent of a child with autism.

For the first time in its history, The North Ward Center’s youth leadership program has a permanent home for its burgeoning recreational program.
In partnership with St. Lucy’s Church, The North Ward Center has leased an underutilized gym in St. Lucy’s Community Center on 7th Avenue. The gym was officially opened March 31 at an event attended by community leaders and children who play in the North Ward Center’s basketball and baseball programs.
