North Ward Center Opens New Summer Camp

The fields at Branch Brook Park’s Stephen N. Adubato Sr. Sports Complex in Newark are normally quiet during summer mornings.

But this year, the fields are filled with kids playing soccer, football and baseball thanks to a new summer camp opened by The North Ward Center.

The North Ward Center Little League and the Liga Roberto Clemente de Newark joined together on Saturday, April 24 to celebrate their 32nd annual opening of baseball season in Newark's North Ward.

 

Carrying red, white and blue balloons and dressed in their team uniforms, more than 500 boys and girls from the North Ward Center's Little League were joined by parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters as they marched down Mount Prospect and Bloomfield avenues to Branch Brook Park's Middle Division Complex.

For the first time in its history, The North Ward Center’s youth leadership program has a permanent home for its burgeoning recreational program.

In partnership with St. Lucy’s Church, The North Ward Center has leased an underutilized gym in St. Lucy’s Community Center on 7th Avenue. The gym was officially opened March 31 at an event attended by community leaders and children who play in the North Ward Center’s basketball and baseball programs.

A 30-year tradition in Newark's North Ward that brings families together for the official start of the Little League baseball season kicked off Saturday with a parade and opening day ceremonies at Branch Brook Park.

Carrying red, white and blue balloons and dressed in their team uniforms, more than 500 boys and girls from the North Ward Center's Little League were joined by parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters as they marched down Mount Prospect and Bloomfield avenues toward the county park's Middle Division Complex.

North Ward Center basketball team returns from tournament with winning record

The North Ward Center's Small Fry basketball team returned from an international tournament as victors, winning three out of five games in tough competition against teams from Puerto Rico and Chicago.

The 13-member team competed in the International Small Fry Basketball Tournament held April 13-16 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The team finished in 11th place out of 32 teams from Puerto Rico, New Jersey, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

Michele Adubato addresses Barringer High School Graduates

Read the story as it originally appeared on nj.com North Ward Center Deputy Executive Director Michele Adubato told the graduating class at Barringer High School in Newark on Friday that the community was proud of them for making it through high school. “You don’t know me, but I’m proud of you,” said Adubato, the commencement speaker. “You need to know, people who don’t know you are proud of you. More than 30 percent of the students who began this journey with you did not make it. You have the right to be proud of yourself.”

Coalition of Newark educators form unlikely alliance trying to reform city schools

Read the story as it originally appeared in the March 14, 2010 edition of The Star-Ledger With educational leaders from Washington to Trenton embracing the role of charter schools in public education, a group of Newark educators - from both charter and district schools - has formed an unlikely alliance to tackle the work of reforming Newark's city schools.   In all, 55 teachers and administrators meet monthly, and have even attended a December retreat, at each member's own cost, in Puerto Rico. Members say the group is trying to put long-held prejudices aside and share successful practices.

Read the story as it originally appeared on nj.com | localtalknews.com Jackie Robinson Day was celebrated in Newark Tuesday at the Harriet Tubman School as Robinson’s family members presented the school with a baseball signed by the Hall of Famer and first African-American to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball.   The day was designed as “Jackie Robinson Day,” in Newark by the City Council, a mayoral proclamation and a resolution from the state Legislature. The event is 63 years almost to the day (April 15, 1947) when Jackie Robison made his debut in Ebbets Field in Brooklyn on opening day.

This story originally ran in The Asbury Park Press on Aug. 19, 2009 He spent Tuesday at the Shark River, miles away from his classroom, but Ryan Hernandez learned several important lessons anyway. He learned kayaking is exhilarating but exhausting. He learned that without knowledge of math and science, "you're not really going to do so good" in a boat. He learned how to tie a knot that could help keep a sailboat firmly in place in middle of a river.
