North Ward Center raises money for breast cancer research

The North Ward Center raised money for breast cancer research in the Susan G. Komen North Jersey Race for the Cure at Branch Brook Park in Newark.

The race, held Sunday, April 27, 2009, drew thousands of participants to the county park for a 5K road race and a 1.5K walk. The event raised more than $1.4 million for breast cancer research.

The North Ward Center fielded a 13-member team that raised $727.

Team captain Jonathan Kowalski was the first member of the North Ward Center team to cross the finish line with a time of 22:50, but his wife, Kimberly, raised the most money - $300.

Other members of the team were: Vanessa Baldwin, Jason Quinones, Kelly Young, Carmen Morales, Jocelyn Paul, Adrianne Davis, Bruno Tedeschi, Theresa Dupras, Aaron Kowalski, Murphy Durkin and Juan Rivera.

Preschoolers Graduate from The North Ward Center

Read this article as it originally appeared on nj.com | localtalknews.com More than 315 preschoolers from the North Ward Child Development Center in Newark graduated before proud parents, grandparents, siblings and friends this week as part of an annual rite of spring at The North Ward Center. “All of our 4 year-olds are either reading or ready to read,” said Child Development Center Project Director Michele Sceppaguercio. “We’re sending them in ready to go on a path of success.”

He learned kayaking is exhilarating but exhausting. He learned that without knowledge of math and science, "you're not really going to do so good" in a boat. He learned how to tie a knot that could help keep a sailboat firmly in place in middle of a river.
