This article originally ran on nj.com March 15, 2009

The Rev. Andre LaPaul Speight said he has been praying for a bus for his Newark ministry. His prayers were answered Sunday when a bus donated by the North Ward Center pulled into the parking lot in front of God's Deliverance Praise and Outreach Center in the city's Central Ward.

"We could never afford a bus like this," Speight told his ministry, which had gathered outside after Sunday service. "This bus will be well used to do our ministry."

The 22-passenger bus had been used to transport clients of North Ward Center's Casa Israel Adult Medical Day Care Center. The center recently acquired a new bus and decided to donate the used bus to a worthy cause, said Adrianne Davis, the center's executive director.

"It's really about developing a partnership with God's Deliverance Praise and Outreach Center," Davis told the ministry. "The presentation of this bus shows our relationship is growing stronger."

God's Deliverance Praise and Outreach Center has been located on in a converted building on S. 17th Ave. for the past 12 years. The 25-year old ministry was founded by Speight's mother- in-law, Rosalyn Twitty.

Speight said the bus would be used to pick up seniors for service as well as transporting youth for community service and trips.

Newark kids get taste of Belmar sailing life

This story originally ran in The Asbury Park Press on Aug. 19, 2009 He spent Tuesday at the Shark River, miles away from his classroom, but Ryan Hernandez learned several important lessons anyway. He learned kayaking is exhilarating but exhausting. He learned that without knowledge of math and science, "you're not really going to do so good" in a boat. He learned how to tie a knot that could help keep a sailboat firmly in place in middle of a river.
