NEWARK, N.J. -- Newark's police director is getting recognition for his efforts to reduce violent crime in New Jersey's largest city.
Garry McCarthy was honored Wednesday at a gathering of New Jersey leaders at the politically influential North Ward Center in Newark.
Attendees included Newark Mayor Cory Booker, New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine and Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie.
McCarthy, born in the Bronx, began his law enforcement career in the New York Police Department, and has headed Newark's police since September 2006.
Shootings and homicides have fallen on McCarthy's watch. Newark recorded 67 homicides and 297 shootings last year. That compares with 104 homicides and 318 shootings in 2005.
Newark-based attorney Angelo Genova, who specializes in political issues, was also honored.
