Students, staff and teachers alike at the North Ward Center and Robert Treat Academy got into the Halloween spirit on Friday, Oct. 29 with parades, a Haunted Maze, “Trunk-or-Treating” and more.

Mario, Spiderman and Tinkerbell were some of the costumes students wore in Ms. Pauline and Ms. Daisy’s pre-K class on Friday. Their preschoolers enjoyed a full schedule of Halloween-themed activities including a pizza party, parade, trick-or-treating and watching the movie “Eloise's Rawther Unusual Halloween.”

Outside the North Ward Center, students and teachers showed off their costumes in an afternoon Halloween parade. Staff from The North Ward Center handed out candy to the likes of Spongebob Squarepants, New York Giants players and Snow White.

“This is such a fun day for all of us at The North Ward Center,” said Michele Adubato, the executive director. “It brings out the kid in all of us.”

Melissa Bagano, a pre-kindergarten teacher, was decked out in full costume as a circus ringleader and said the center was really fortunate to have such good weather.

“The students were excited because it only comes around once a year,” Bagano said.

Over at Robert Treat Academy, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” could be heard throughout the school as students congregated in the gymnasium to take pictures and show off their costumes in front of parents and teachers.
Kindergarten teacher Jeanine Kloss said her students made Halloween art and poems, learned the “Five Little Jack-O-Lanterns” song and another class even carved a pumpkin.

In the morning, the gym was also transformed into a Haunted Maze.

“The Haunted Maze scared a lot of them,” Kloss said. “They’ve been counting down every day to Halloween and each day that it was closer they’ve been more excited.”

After the parade, students at Robert Treat Academy made their way to the parking lot outside for “Trunk-or-Treat.” Teachers’ car trunks turned into scary Halloween scenes of spider webs, blood and fangs. Some older Robert Treat students also helped hand out candy with the teachers.

Parent Betsy Cruz went trunk-or-treating with her son Rafael, who is a first grader at Robert Treat Academy.
“This is the first year he’s at the school and we’re very excited for him to be here,” Cruz said.

Adrianne Davis, the vice president of the Board of Trustees at Robert Treat, said the day’s events are just another way to get parents involved in the school.

“It’s important for us to have the parents visit the school as often as possible,” Davis said. “That way they feel like they are part of their children’s educational experience.”

Newark kids get taste of Belmar sailing life

This story originally ran in The Asbury Park Press on Aug. 19, 2009 He spent Tuesday at the Shark River, miles away from his classroom, but Ryan Hernandez learned several important lessons anyway. He learned kayaking is exhilarating but exhausting. He learned that without knowledge of math and science, "you're not really going to do so good" in a boat. He learned how to tie a knot that could help keep a sailboat firmly in place in middle of a river.
