Center for Autism Workshop Focuses on Communication

They had all been through the same struggle. Their children wanted to tell them something, but they couldn’t say it. So the children became frustrated and acted out. And that frustrated the parents.

Such is one of the many challenges of having a child with autism and that’s why more than 20 parents attended a workshop on functional communication at the Center for Autism at The North Ward Center on Roseville Avenue on April 28.

The Center for Autism at The North Ward Center kicked off Autism Awareness Month with the first MOM2MOM workshop on Wednesday, April 6.

MOM2MOM Director Cherie Castellano, M.A., L.P.C., and Peer Mom Counselor Nakeishia Knox facilitated the focus group at the Center for Autism, located at 341 Roseville Avenue in Newark.

Newark center trains N.J. police, emergency personnel on autism awareness

NEWARK -- A state trooper found Tahira Williams last week running alongside the southbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway and realized something wasn’t quite right. He pulled over and helped the 19-year-old autistic woman into his patrol car. 

"He probably could tell she has a disability," said Williams’ mother Kim, who was relieved that a trooper found her and was able to navigate her from harm’s way.

Center for Autism Provides Free Autism Awareness Training for First Responders

State Health and Senior Services Commissioner Poonam Alaigh joined police, firefighters and other emergency responders at the Center for Autism at The North Ward Center in Newark today to highlight the importance of autism awareness training for first responders.

The event, part of the Center for Autism's month-long series of training sessions for Autism Awareness Month in April, marked the official opening of The North Center for Autism. During the day, the Center for Autism offered free three, two-hour training sessions for police, firefighters, paramedics, teachers and parents.

Preschoolers Graduate from The North Ward Center

Read this article as it originally appeared on nj.com | localtalknews.com More than 315 preschoolers from the North Ward Child Development Center in Newark graduated before proud parents, grandparents, siblings and friends this week as part of an annual rite of spring at The North Ward Center. “All of our 4 year-olds are either reading or ready to read,” said Child Development Center Project Director Michele Sceppaguercio. “We’re sending them in ready to go on a path of success.”

Read this article as it originally appeared on nj.com | localtalknews.com The North Ward Center’s Family Success Center invited the community to take steps toward preventative health care and learn about services available to them at a health fair on Saturday, June 11 at Casa Israel Adult Medical Day Care Center. “These events are vital because for people who don’t have insurance, this is where they find out what’s wrong and where prevention can take place,” said Newark Community Health Centers (NCHC) Marketing and Outreach Representative Nilsa Santiago, who coordinated the fair in collaboration with the North Ward Center.

This story originally ran in The Asbury Park Press on Aug. 19, 2009 He spent Tuesday at the Shark River, miles away from his classroom, but Ryan Hernandez learned several important lessons anyway. He learned kayaking is exhilarating but exhausting. He learned that without knowledge of math and science, "you're not really going to do so good" in a boat. He learned how to tie a knot that could help keep a sailboat firmly in place in middle of a river.
