The fields at Branch Brook Park’s Stephen N. Adubato Sr. Sports Complex in Newark are normally quiet during summer mornings.
But this year, the fields are filled with kids playing soccer, football and baseball thanks to a new summer camp opened by The North Ward Center.

North Ward Center Deputy Executive Director Michele Adubato told the graduating class at Barringer High School in Newark on Friday that the community was proud of them for making it through high school.
“You don’t know me, but I’m proud of you,” said Adubato, the commencement speaker. “You need to know, people who don’t know you are proud of you. More than 30 percent of the students who began this journey with you did not make it. You have the right to be proud of yourself.”

Forty-nine eighth graders from Robert Treat Academy graduated from the Newark charter school Friday during a commencement ceremony at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in front of hundreds of proud parents, siblings and teachers.
The class of 2010 is the sixth to graduate from the K-8 school, which was founded in 1997 by North Ward Center Founder Stephen N. Adubato Sr. as one of the first charter schools in the state.

State Education Commissioner Bret Schundler gave the keynote address today as 49 eighth-graders graduated from Newark's Robert Treat Academy.
"When I was mayor of Jersey City, I worked with others around the state to pass charter school legislation," Schundler told a packed auditorium at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. When he saw his first class graduate in Jersey City he said, "That was one of the happiest days of my life."

The Robert Treat Academy student debate team and Stand and Deliver program participants finished their seasons with impressive results this year, demonstrating how well their education has prepared them to succeed at academic-based competition.
The debate team finished fourth overall in the Jersey Urban Debate League, in which 23 Newark middle schools competed in 1,125 debates this year. Trophies were awarded June 10 at an awards ceremony at Science Park High School to 68 experienced debaters with teams that had six or more wins including Maple Avenue, Peshine Avenue and Robert Treat Academy.
