NEWARK -- Gov.-elect Chris Christie, along with city and state politicians, joined Stephen Adubato Sr. and about 1,300 Newark schoolchildren at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart today to celebrate Three Kings Day and kick off the North Ward Center's 40th anniversary celebration.
Political kings and kingmakers from the city and state lined up under the vaulted ceilings of the ornate cathedral to pay their respects to Adubato during an event that was as much theater as community celebration.
The North Ward Center, founded by Adubato in 1970, has grown into one of the largest educational and community centers in the city and also serves as Adubato's seat of political power.
Praising the North Ward Center's contribution to the city, Mayor Cory Booker said, "First and foremost I want to give gratitude to its leader, Steve Adubato," he said.
Christie, who pointed to Adubato's Robert Treat Academy as a model of education reform throughout his campaign, made his first post-victory stop at the charter school, and has made Newark a centerpiece of his pre-gubernatorial activity. Many of his inaugural day events are also scheduled here. Read more...

Students of the Robert Treat Academy in Newark broke open their piggy banks earlier this month to raise $5,248.79 for Haitian earthquake victims.
The North and Central campuses of the charter school held a "Penny Wars" competition from Feb. 1 through 8 where students divided into teams to raise the most money. Pennies counted as "positive" points while dimes, nickels and quarters thrown into the opposing teams' buckets were deducted from the opposing team's total.

On Wednesday, my car radio was telling me Gov.-elect Chris Christie was going to spend a quiet, restful day with his family. But an e-mail alert said Christie was going to visit the Robert Treat Academy in Newark in about an hour. There had to be a back story.

Tuesday was a tough day for me. I got the double Adubato.
In the morning I drove to Montclair to shoot a brief TV interview with Steve Adubato Jr. about the race for governor. Adubato, who lives in Montclair, listened intently as I described how I had asked both of the major party candidates what they would do to reduce property taxes in the town, where the annual tax bill can exceed the price of a Toyota.
