Newark educator Stephen N. Adubato, Sr., received an honorary degree from Kean University Tuesday at the Nathan Weiss Graduate College commencement ceremony at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.
Adubato, who received a Doctor of Human Letters degree, was honored for his contributions to Newark, which include the founding of The North Ward Center and the Robert Treat Academy Charter School.
"Widely recognized for his tireless efforts on behalf of Newark's residents, especially in the area of education and social services, Mr. Adubato has consistently worked to improve the lives of others for more than four decades," said Eugene Enlow, the chairman of the Kean University Board of Trustees, who presented Adubato with the degree. Kean University President Dr. Dawood Farahi said Adubato deserved recognition for his many positive contributions to the city.
"Mr. Adubato has made a positive difference in the lives of so many individuals," Farahi said.

"A great philosopher said the meaning of life is love and work," Adubato said. "I want to talk to you about passion. My passion is connected with work. Most of you will spend more time at your job than you will with your friends or even your family. If you are not excited about that experience, you won't be happy." Read more...

The fields at Branch Brook Park’s Stephen N. Adubato Sr. Sports Complex in Newark are normally quiet during summer mornings.
But this year, the fields are filled with kids playing soccer, football and baseball thanks to a new summer camp opened by The North Ward Center.

State Education Commissioner Bret Schundler gave the keynote address today as 49 eighth-graders graduated from Newark's Robert Treat Academy.
"When I was mayor of Jersey City, I worked with others around the state to pass charter school legislation," Schundler told a packed auditorium at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. When he saw his first class graduate in Jersey City he said, "That was one of the happiest days of my life."

NEWARK -- A state trooper found Tahira Williams last week running alongside the southbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway and realized something wasn’t quite right. He pulled over and helped the 19-year-old autistic woman into his patrol car.
"He probably could tell she has a disability," said Williams’ mother Kim, who was relieved that a trooper found her and was able to navigate her from harm’s way.

Forty-nine eighth graders from Robert Treat Academy graduated from the Newark charter school Friday during a commencement ceremony at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in front of hundreds of proud parents, siblings and teachers.
The class of 2010 is the sixth to graduate from the K-8 school, which was founded in 1997 by North Ward Center Founder Stephen N. Adubato Sr. as one of the first charter schools in the state. Read more...

The North Ward Center Little League and the Liga Roberto Clemente de Newark joined together on Saturday, April 24 to celebrate their 32nd annual opening of baseball season in Newark's North Ward.
Carrying red, white and blue balloons and dressed in their team uniforms, more than 500 boys and girls from the North Ward Center's Little League were joined by parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters as they marched down Mount Prospect and Bloomfield avenues to Branch Brook Park's Middle Division Complex. More than 330 children from the North Ward Child Development Center in Newark graduated from preschool during five days of ceremonies before hundreds of proud parents, grandparents siblings and friends.

The North Ward Center's Casa Israel Adult Medical Day Care Center commemorated its eighth anniversary with a fun-filled celebration honoring the progress the center has made since it opened its doors in 2001.
Clients and staff gathered in the main hall Friday, Sept. 25, for the day’s festivities, which included food, gifts, music and dancing. More than 100 people attended a women's health fair sponsored by The North Ward Center's Family Success Center in Newark, where they received glucose, body mass and blood pressure screenings, breast exams, and attended workshops on nutrition and breast health.
The event, which took place May 8 at Casa Israel Medical Day Care Center, was held in collaboration with the Newark Community Health Centers and Horizon Blue Cross-Blue Shield of New Jersey. State Health and Senior Services Commissioner Poonam Alaigh joined police, firefighters and other emergency responders at the Center for Autism at The North Ward Center in Newark today to highlight the importance of autism awareness training for first responders.
The event, part of the Center for Autism's month-long series of training sessions for Autism Awareness Month in April, marked the official opening of The North Center for Autism. During the day, the Center for Autism offered free three, two-hour training sessions for police, firefighters, paramedics, teachers and parents.
